Herdname
In accordance with the Animal Improvement Act of 1998 each breeder must register a herdname, also known as a studname or prefix for the naming of pedigree livestock, which herdname is allocated by the Stud Book Association and no duplication with any members and breeds is allowed. The herdname should not exceed 18 characters.
A list of five or six words in order of preference must be completed on the form. The name of a town, city or post office is not allowed.
Registration of herd designation mark (HDM)
Herd designation marks are registered in respect of each breeder. These may be the same as the registered branding but it is not essential. These letters are registered for the relevant breeder’s sole use to identify the animals bred by him or her. Animals bred by you are branded with your herd designation marks followed by the abbreviated year letter and the sequence number of the calf. For instance if your HDM are “AV” the first calf born in your herd in 2005 will be identified as AV 05 1, the next one AV 05 2 etc. Bull and heifer calves are identified in the sequence in which they are born and numbers are therefore never duplicated. The same is applicable to Appendix cows. They are marked in the same sequence as the SP calves and no Appendix calf may have the same number as an SP calf.
Council recommended that Appendix animals may also be branded with the A, B or C whereby the relevant appendix section may be distinguished.
Prior to inspection all animals must be branded or tattooed with the breeder’s herd designation mark.
Breeders receive an annual visit from the Society’s inspectors and breeders are requested beforehand to indicate the number of animals that will be presented for inspection. This enables the inspectors to draw up an itinerary.
Intergis registration number
When your participation is approved by the SA Stud Book you will receive an Intergis member number. You must use this member number on all documents of animals that you purchase, breed and register.
List of animals in your possession A list must be completed indicating all the details of all animals purchased and in respect of which you are already in possession of registration certificates. Should you not yet be in possession of the documentation of the animals purchased, the identification of such animals must also be submitted.
Society and Stud Book fees are revised on an annual basis. The entry fee is however a once off fee but all other applicable fees are revised annually. Both the Society’s and the SA Stud Book’s financial year commences on July 01 of each year. At the end of April the SA Stud Book will provide you with a list of animals which, according to their records are in your possession. You have time until the end of June to check such list and to effect the necessary corrections. You will thereafter receive the Stud Book’s account for your annual member fees and levy on the animals remaining on your list.
